The Problem
with Plastic

It is estimated that over 50% of plastic is used only once and then thrown away.

Plastic was created in the 1950s and since its inception, scientists have calculated there has been over 8 billion metric tons of plastic produced worldwide. Nearly half of this incomprehensible quatity was manufactured after the year 2000. Every year the world generates 300 million tons of plastic with over 8 million tons finding its way into our oceans.  Researchers have projected that if we continue on our current course, there will be 26 billion metric tons of plastic produced by 2050.  This would be more plastic waste than fish, ton for ton.

The real problem with plastic lies in the fact that plastic does not biodegrade well. It just accumulates and contaminates the environment. The most commonly used plastics never biodegrade and therefore break down into just micrometers in size. The effects on aquatic animals is well-documented.  Nearly 700 marine species and over 50 freshwater species have consumed or been entangled by plastic. One study from the World Wildlife Fund estimates humans eat 5 grams of plastic per week, which is the eqivalent of one credit card of microplastics. Yuck!
